Generic Allopurinol
A prescription drug called allopurinol is used to treat some kidney stones and gout. Additionally, it is used to stop chemotherapy patients from developing elevated uric acid levels.
Additionally, excessive amounts of uric acid that accumulate in the blood are treated with allopurinol. When some types of cancer patients are receiving chemotherapy drugs, elevated levels of uric acid that accumulate in the blood as tumors break down are also addressed with allopurinol. It can also be used for patients with high urine acid levels to treat kidney stones. The category of medications known as xanthine oxidase inhibitors includes allopurinol. It reduces the body’s capacity to manufacture uric acid, which is how it works. High amounts of uric acid may cause kidney stones or gout attacks. Allopurinol is used to stop gout episodes from happening rather than treat them once they have already occurred.
You might not get all of the benefits of allopurinol for a few months or longer. Initially, when taking allopurinol, you can experience more gout attacks, but gradually, it will stop attacks from happening.
Take this drug by mouth as prescribed by your doctor, often once daily. Take this drug after eating to lessen gastrointestinal discomfort. You will need to take multiple smaller doses throughout the day to obtain your daily dosage of more than 300 mg (ask your doctor for directions).
