Allopurinol is prescribed to treat kidney stones and some types of gout. It is also used to prevent uric acid levels from rising. Due to the cancer cells’ production of uric acid as they die, these individuals may have elevated uric acid levels. By lowering the body’s production of uric acid, allopurinol reduces uric acid levels. Gout and renal issues are both brought on by high uric acid levels.

Use this medication by mouth as prescribed by your doctor, often once daily. Take this drug after eating to lessen gastrointestinal discomfort.

The amount of uric acid in your body will determine how much allopurinol (Zyloprim) you should take each day. One dosage per day or several smaller doses spread out across the day are both OK. There is an 800 mg daily limit. For each indication, the standard starting dosage is:

Gout: 100mg/day
